Day Nine and why you should Alkalise

Day Nine
First day back teaching spin this morning (6.15am) was dreading it a bit, as not taught or done any real cardio work for about 4 weeks, and after watching Britains Biggest Loser last night (won't comment on it) thought someone might have to call on a medic for me.

But got through it, nearly said easily, but it certainly wasn't that !, except for some mic and CD jumping issues, was good to be back in the saddle, love teaching spin, do two a week, which really keeps me enjoying it, which is one of the most important parts of your training, yes make it as hard and intense as you can, but you have to walk away, thinking "Yes, good job well done, loved that session" maybe not in the first 5 minutes of finishing though.

Today I thought I would talk a little about alkalising your body, alkalising food and diets.

The natural balance of alkalinity to acidity in the human body is 80% alkalinity to 20% acidity, but in the modern western diet, full of processed food, high animal protein and fats which can cause the body to become more acidic. Which in turn can lead to the breakdown of the bodies cells, so your body starts to age prematurely and can cause illness, skin problems and inflammation.

Also Acidic foods are generally lacking in fibre, which helps control blood sugar and improves bowel health. The friendly bacteria in the gut need fibre to function properly. Without them, not only does the digestive system suffer, but also your immune defences are weakened.

Alkalising food on the other hand, help to oxygenate and get the blood flowing. They help to clean out damaged and clogged blood vessels and organs so they can operate to their full capacity. When your body is working correctly it requires minimal energy to perform its functions, and this is why after a few days or a week on the Elimination Diet you start to feel more  energetic and healthy because our diet is more alkaline.

Alkalinising foods, it will come as no surprise are best found in (preferably organic)  fruit and vegetables, although some have an acidic effect, having a large variety of fruit and vegetables in your diet will best help maintain that acid/alkaline balance.

Cutting down your meat consumption will help to, trying to vary between, meats and fish while trying to have some meat/fish free meals during the week, and one raw meal a day (not raw meat) .
A good ratio to aim for is 80/20 raw to cooked foods, but if you find that too hard to manage stick to 70/30 but I wouldn't recommend any more than that.

Craig :-)
